Marlborough City Of Kings   by Simon Haughtone

Marlborough is midway between London and Bristol. It is very rich in historic interest and culture.
Marlborough was at one time controlled by “Richard the lion hearted” who built a wooden mote along with “Bailey castle”. Two kings were actually married here.

In the year twelve sixty seven, in Marlborough, Henry the third passed a law limiting the king from taking land ownership from the people, This law remains in effect today, and is the oldest unrepeated law in all of England. During the Norman times a coin was minted in the town of Marlborough bearing it’s name.

Today there is still much going on in Marlborough. There are many shops and pubs, as well as many numerous markets. There is also ample boating and fishing.

Marlborough players perform frequently in the town centre. One of Marlborough more notorious natives is William Golding. He grew up here in town and attended the Marlborough elementary school. You undoubtedly remember Golding as the author of the classic book “Lord of the flies”.

Marlborough’s Heights ST. is loaded with wonderful old buildings featuring a combination of Medieval and Georgian design. These must be seen to be appreciated. You may have a tour of “Merchant’s house” which is undergoing some renovations, but still welcomes the public to have a tour.

Just a short ten mile drive from Marlborough you will find “Wilton windmill” which was built in eighteen twenty one. It has been fully restored and offers guided tours. You may also purchase a small bag of stone ground flour which is available and has been produced using the mills power.

Just twenty miles from Marlborough you will find the famous stone circle known as “Stonehenge” Make sure you are prepared and arrive early, as this sight is very busy year round, as I’m sure you would imagine. How could anyone be this close to Stonehenge and not visit?

Marlborough also has a stone circle of it’s own. “Avebury” is actually much older and larger than Stonehenge. It is another must see.

As you can see, Marlborough is not a town to be missed.
